Citizenship granted to Iranian soccer players who sought asylum

Two Iranian women's soccer team members who sought asylum in Australia in March have been granted Australian citizenship. Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh took the oath of citizenship in a ceremony in Brisbane on Wednesday, accompanied by supporters from the local Iranian community. The Human Rights Law Centre is urging the government to extend this pathway to citizenship to other refugees in Australia, particularly those who have lived in the country for years on temporary visas.

The two soccer players expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to become citizens and emphasized the importance of this moment, despite the challenges they faced. However, other Iranian refugees in Australia, such as Fatemeh Lahmidi and Mahsa Mazaheri, remain in a state of uncertainty with no path to citizenship, despite having lived in the country for over a decade.
