Body found in California home burned by wildfire believed started by chain saw

Investigators in California have identified a dead body found inside a home ravaged by a wildfire, linking it to a blaze believed to have been caused accidentally by sparks from a chain saw. Herbert Wayne Smith, 65, is currently in custody and is suspected of recklessly causing the fire on Monday while operating equipment capable of producing sparks without clearing flammable vegetation, as mandated by regulations. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is investigating the incident.

Smith expressed remorse in an interview with KCRA-TV, stating, "I'm so sorry for everything that's happened. This is going to destroy my life, one way or another." Authorities are still determining if the fire played a role in the death of the individual found in a burned dwelling near Angels Camp. Meanwhile, fires continue to rage in eastern Washington state, near Spokane, where three major blazes persist despite cooler temperatures and calmer winds aiding firefighters. Although no fatalities have been reported, over 800 buildings have been destroyed.
