The rapid spread of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has prompted health officials from the Africa CDC and the World Health Organization to investigate whether the virus may have mutated. Jean Kaseya, the Director-General of Africa CDC, described the severity of this Bundibugyo outbreak as unprecedented. "We are conducting some investigations to understand whether a mutation occurred," he said in his weekly briefing. "We need to figure this out and know how to deal with it."

Kaseya emphasized that the current outbreak far exceeds their capabilities, stating that they must now assume 4,000 cases, with over 3,900 confirmed cases reported just 24 hours earlier. This number represents more than eight times the number of cases during the comparable period of the 2014 West Africa Ebola outbreak, the deadliest in the continent's history.

Similarly, the number of deaths during this period is more than six times higher. "We are building capacity, but this outbreak exceeds our capabilities," Kaseya added. While new laboratories and treatment centers are being constructed, Kaseya stressed that without stopping the spread at the community level, the efforts are meaningless.
