Zoox to start charging for robotaxi rides in Las Vegas

Zoox, the Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle technology company, announced plans to start charging for robotaxi rides in Las Vegas as of August 10. This marks the launch of its commercial operations. Founded in 2014, Zoox has spent years developing a custom-built electric vehicle and self-driving system, culminating in a cube-like vehicle equipped with sensors and a moonroof, but without a steering wheel or pedals.

The company faced numerous challenges, including funding, technical development, securing permits, and recalls. However, last week, federal safety regulators granted Zoox a temporary exemption from certain federal motor vehicle safety standards, allowing it to charge customers for rides. This exemption, valid for two years and covering up to 2,500 vehicles, spans eight federal motor vehicle standards.

Zoox currently offers robotaxis in Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Austin, but will initially provide them for free in these markets. In California, the company still requires two more permits to operate commercially. Zoox's robotaxi fare will be determined by a base fare plus distance and time traveled from pick-up to drop-off, calculated based on the most efficient route.

While the fare remains constant, the route may vary. Additionally, destination fees for trips to the airport or high-traffic areas may be included in the pricing, ensuring competitiveness with traditional ride-hail services.
