Why Mark Hamill Replaced Tim Curry As The Joker On Batman: The Animated Series

The transition of The Joker's voice actor on Batman: The Animated Series was far from straightforward. The original choice, Tim Curry, was recast after producer Alan Burnett expressed that he struggled to relate to his portrayal of the character. Andrea Romano, the show's voice director, relayed this sentiment to Vulture in 2017.

Subsequently, Mark Hamill's agent reached out to Romano, informing her of Hamill's eagerness to be a part of the project, given his passion for comics. Curry, however, has a different recollection; he claimed he was fired due to a bout of bronchitis. Despite the controversy surrounding Curry's departure, his unique and menacing vocal performance was initially well-received by the creative team.

Producer Bruce Timm had been impressed with Curry's rendition, which closely matched their desired vision for The Joker. However, as the team began to understand and sympathize with Burnett's concerns, they decided to recast the role. Hamill, who had already been cast as a business tycoon, also expressed his desire to fully commit to the role of The Joker, leading to his audition. Despite initial reservations, Hamill's performance ultimately won over the team.
