WA's NAPLAN results trigger 'concern' for year 3s

Western Australia's Year 9 students have emerged as the state's top performers in the NAPLAN exams, outperforming the national average across every category. However, the results have raised concerns about the state's Year 3 students, with nearly 40% struggling with numeracy. Writing scores for Year 3 students in WA have also declined by 1.7% compared to the previous year. Despite these challenges, Year 9 students in WA have demonstrated significant improvement, outperforming the national average in every category.

The NAPLAN testing, which all students in Australia participated in, covered five categories: writing, spelling, reading, numeracy, and grammar and punctuation. When assessing how students ranked in these categories, the most concerning figure from WA was the year 3 numeracy scores, where 39.9% of students were placed in the bottom two tiers. Education Minister Sabine Winton acknowledged the concerns surrounding Year 3 numeracy scores, stating that the NAPLAN figures were "encouraging" for Year 9 students.

However, she emphasized that the real value lies in the growth each child experiences over time, with the education system performing well in Year 9 results. The Minister also noted that the decline in Year 3 numeracy scores could be attributed to a growing number of children with development delays and complex needs entering the school system.

Opposition education spokesperson Liam Staltari echoed these concerns, expressing worry that the government should not ignore the "warning signs." Staltari highlighted the need for better support in the critical early years, such as low student-to-teacher ratios and addressing teacher burnout, to ensure children are set up for success in their education.
