Vor den „Midterms“: Linker Demokrat El-Sayed gewinnt Vorwahl in Michigan

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, seen as progressive, emerged victorious in a critical party primary in Michigan's state senator race. He narrowly defeated moderate Democrat Haley Stevens, as US media predicted. The race took on greater importance due to upcoming midterm elections on November 3rd, where Michigan will vote for one of its 33 Senate seats.

El-Sayed will then face Republican Mike Rogers in the general election. The outcome could be crucial for future majority control in the House of Representatives, as experts deem this "swing state" one of few where vote outcomes are hard to predict. Michigan's current senator, Gary Peters, is a Republican who currently holds a slim majority.

Democrats are particularly interested in how well El-Sayed can perform in the midterm elections beyond his own party. US President Donald Trump labeled reports of El-Sayed's win as "great news for the Republican Party," calling him a "communist failure" on his Truth Social platform. Trump last used the communist label to criticize left-leaning Democrats who have recently seen success elsewhere.

El-Sayed was born to Egyptian immigrant parents in Michigan and studied medicine at Columbia University and Oxford University. He rose to lead Detroit's health department at just 30 years old. In 2018, he ran for governor of Michigan but lost to incumbent Gretchen Whitmer. His key proposals include universal state healthcare (Medicare for All), higher taxes on the wealthy, an end to corporate super PAC donations, and action on climate change.

El-Sayed also holds a critical view of Israeli government policies and calls for an end to US military aid. He enjoys strong support from the left wing of his party, including Senators Elizabeth Warren, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Congressman Ro Khanna.
