Trump-Endorsed Candidate Loses Michigan Primary to a Man Who Suspended His Campaign

In Michigan's 8th Congressional District GOP primary, Thomas J. Smith emerged victorious, claiming 50 percent of the votes, while his endorsed rival Amir Hassan garnered approximately 33 percent. The outcome marked a significant margin, with over 10,000 votes separating the two candidates. Smith's campaign had suspended its operations in mid-July, too late to remove his name from the ballot.

Prior to the election, Smith formally endorsed Al Lemmo, garnering 16 percent of the vote on Tuesday. Initially, President Donald Trump endorsed Hassan in June, a decision that faced strong opposition from some of Trump's supporters, driven by what they perceived as anti-Islamic sentiments. Hassan's campaign website asserted his dedication to Christianity, claiming Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

The candidate also received backing from House Republicans' campaign committee, which highlighted his naval service and past as a federal law enforcement officer. According to Federal Election Commission filings, Hassan's campaign expenditure surpassed $600,000, whereas Smith, having no filings, spent no money on his campaign. At a recent Republican event in Warren, Michigan, Smith delivered a brief speech lasting about 13 seconds, declaring his intention to challenge "communist comrade Rivet."

Smith told Politico earlier on Wednesday: "I look forward to working with Speaker [Mike] Johnson and the entire Republican team to expand our House majority and advance President Trump’s America First agenda to lower costs for working families and make America affordable again." Smith is now set to face Kristen McDonald Rivet, the incumbent Democratic representative who has represented the district since 2025.
