'Tread carefully': SC calls for restraint, dialogue in dealing with student protesters

The Supreme Court has cautioned authorities to show restraint and engage in dialogue when dealing with student protesters, stating that violent responses only exacerbate the situation. The court's comments were made in the context of a case involving the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and allegations of violence during their protests across India, including instances of stone-throwing.

Chief Justice Surya Kant emphasized that during peaceful marches, law enforcement should exercise caution to prevent young people from resorting to violence. The court expressed trust in the judgment and discretion of law enforcement agencies, suggesting they possess the knowledge to handle the matter appropriately. The court's remarks came after CJP alleged assurances from the Central Government regarding the withdrawal of FIRs registered against students in Bihar and Assam, as well as a promise against filing additional criminal cases against protesters linked to the agitation.

CJP has been pushing for the dismissal of cases against students who took part in protests concerning alleged irregularities in the NEET examination process.
