Tamil Nadu government vows to secure rightful share in inter-state river water

The Tamil Nadu government committed to ensuring the state’s fair share of water from inter-state rivers and safeguarding its water-sharing rights. In its latest budget presentation, Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson announced plans to boost the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam, develop the Anaimalaiyar and Nallar dams, and expedite the Godavari-Cauvery river-linking project. These initiatives aim to enhance long-term water security and support farmers.

The government pledged to release Cauvery water on time, adhering to agreements, tribunal rulings, and judicial directives. "Tamil Nadu's water rights will be protected through steadfast legal, technical, and administrative measures, including opposing projects that may encroach upon the state's entitlements, such as the Mekedatu project," Wilson stated.

Wilson criticized previous governments for the sluggish progress of river-linking projects, which adversely impacted agricultural productivity. The current administration expressed worry over the pollution of the Cauvery, Vaigai, and Thamirabharani rivers due to the release of untreated industrial waste, domestic sewage, and the disposal of solid waste.

To address this issue, the government plans to allocate ₹25 crore for thorough feasibility studies and project reports. The proposed actions include constructing sewage and effluent treatment plants, implementing comprehensive solid-waste management systems in rural and urban areas along the rivers, developing riverfronts in urban centers, and cleaning the river surfaces.
