SpaceX's mobile ambitions jolt US telecom market, analysts debate threat

On August 4th, SpaceX's plans for a mobile service caused investors in the U.S. wireless sector to become apprehensive. The company's acquisition of 65 megahertz of wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar earlier this year enabled Starlink to expand into mobile services. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell confirmed during an earnings call that the company intends to build the infrastructure to make Starlink a genuine mobile service, and expects to win customers from the Big Three wireless carriers, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.

The news led to a decline in shares of Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, with their stocks plummeting by 2.2 percent to 4 percent in after-hours trading. While analysts acknowledge the potential threat SpaceX poses, they also caution that converting Starlink into a nationwide wireless business would demand significant investment and time. The three largest U.S. wireless carriers have already invested billions of dollars in building and upgrading their networks, a task SpaceX would find challenging to match.

Analysts argue that SpaceX's direct-to-device service for areas without cellular coverage gives it a head start, but turning Starlink into a true competitor will require years of effort. Some investors believe the market may have undervalued the potential disruption SpaceX could bring to the wireless industry, while others remain skeptical of SpaceX's ability to replicate the infrastructure built by terrestrial players over the past three decades.
