Sophie Cunningham wants to put focus back on basketball: ‘What are we doing?’

Sophie Cunningham has stated that the conversation surrounding her remarks on transgender athletes in women's sports has been a "distraction," and she wishes to refocus on basketball. At a practice session, Cunningham lamented that the WNBA media covers "everything except basketball," urging, "What are we doing?" She believes it is crucial to keep the primary focus on the main thing, which is basketball.

In July, Cunningham had expressed her intent to "protect young girls in the locker room" and to bar transgender athletes from competing in women's sports. She reiterated her stance a day later, stating that it is "common sense" to exclude transgender athletes. Her comments sparked protests at Fever games in Seattle, Portland, and Minnesota, with another rally planned for Saturday outside the United Center in Chicago before Indiana's match against the Sky.

Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve voiced support for transgender individuals, and Cunningham was met with boos from fans during Indiana's game in Minnesota. Cunningham emphasized that basketball remains the central focus, highlighting her team's strong performance and the positive atmosphere in the locker room. The Fever have won five of their last six games and are set to face the Las Vegas Aces at home on Thursday.

Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, who met Cunningham at halfcourt following their teams' recent loss, argues that the narrative surrounding the issue is flawed. Reeve stressed the significance of supporting trans kids and athletes, asserting that every child has the right to sports, regardless of their gender identity. She believes that exclusion is not the solution and that there is a need to find common ground and promote inclusivity.

Cunningham expressed respect for Reeve's viewpoint, emphasizing that respectful dialogue is essential in addressing the issue.
