Singapore’s 68-year-old yong tau foo hawker stall quietly shuts

Singapore's 68-year-old yong tau foo hawker stall, Golden Mile Special Yong Tau Foo, has quietly closed its doors. The news was shared on a neighboring stall's Facebook page, which announced that the yong tau foo stall would be replaced by an authentic Chinese dessert stall. The closure was confirmed by Ah Xiao Teochew Braised Duck, who had no social media presence of its own and did not officially announce the details of the closure.

The stall was operated by second-generation hawkers Chng and his sister. It originated in 1958 when their father began a pushcart business along Jalan Sultan, transitioning to the Golden Mile Food Centre when it opened in 1975. Chng, an avid player at the hawker center as a child, later assisted in the family business and eventually took over its operations.

According to a 2020 report by Mothership, the stall maintained a steady flow of customers, attracting long queues until February of the current year, with its food often selling out by lunchtime. The stall's yong tau foo ingredients were priced at S$0.60 (US$0.47), with a minimum order of eight pieces costing S$4.80.
