Singapore court jails Hong Kong mother, adult son for violent Changi clash

A Singaporean court has sentenced a 65-year-old Hong Kong mother, Chan Sui-kwan, and her 42-year-old adult son, Chan Wing-kwan, to jail terms totaling 16 months for their roles in a violent altercation at Changi Airport. The incident unfolded on June 30, 2024, at Terminal 3, where the pair allegedly targeted a police officer and a bystander.

The son, Chan Wing-kwan, received a 10-day jail term for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing his duty. According to court records, the confrontation began when the son mistakenly believed bystanders were mocking him, prompting him to kick his mother. When a 69-year-old bystander intervened to assist the mother, she told the son to leave, but he refused and escalated the situation by aggressively challenging the bystander to a fight.

The altercation continued on another floor of the terminal, where the son kicked his mother once more. Meanwhile, a bystander attempted to call the police, and the son rushed towards him, resulting in a scuffle. During the fight, the son inflicted severe injuries on the bystander, causing a head haematoma, knee abrasions, and bruised fingers. Police recorded the mother and son's passport details before handing them back.

Later that day, the pair was found in the departure hall and arrested. The mother, Chan Sui-kwan, resisted arrest fiercely, leading to an officer being bitten on his right forearm through his clothing. Both were charged on July 29 and sentenced on Monday. The mother missed a scheduled court date on July 22, 2024, which led to the issuance of an arrest warrant, while her son had already been charged on April 24, 2024, and missed the same court date, prompting an arrest warrant.
