Senate Confirms Erica Schwartz as CDC Director

The U.S. Senate confirmed Erica Schwartz, MD, MPH, JD, as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday, marking a significant appointment for the public health agency. With a 51-44 vote, Schwartz, a 54-year-old medical doctor, public health professional, and lawyer, becomes the 22nd leader of the Atlanta-based CDC, filling a role vacated nearly a year prior.

Schwartz's confirmation comes after a tumultuous period for the CDC, which has faced political meddling, low morale, and a significant loss of personnel. Under the Trump administration, the agency has lost more than 3,000 employees, constituting over a quarter of its workforce, due to layoffs and resignations. Morale has plummeted, and the front office has been staffed by political appointees lacking medical or public health training.

Despite initial concerns about Schwartz's willingness to resist orders from President Donald Trump's Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cassidy, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee chairman, later expressed confidence in her ability to uphold scientific and public health practices.

Schwartz's nomination, initially viewed with cautious optimism by public health experts, was initially opposed by Kennedy, who was a prominent anti-vaccine advocate before taking on the CDC leadership role.

Schwartz's background includes a medical and law degree, a stint as deputy surgeon general, and a leadership position at the U.S. Coast Guard. She is the third Trump nominee for the CDC directorship in the past 18 months, with previous nominees David Weldon, MD, and Susan Monarez, PhD, both falling short of confirmation.
