Russian drone destroys unique 300-year-old wooden Cossack church in Ukraine

On August 1-2, a Russian drone strike in southern Ukraine destroyed an 18th-century wooden church, marking the last surviving example of Cossack architecture from that era in Beryslav, a historic settlement in the Kherson region. The Holy Vvedenska (Presentation) Church, which stood for nearly three centuries since its construction in 1725 using oak from the Perevolochna fortress of the Zaporizhzhian Cossacks, was completely burnt beyond recognition.

Oleksandr Alchiev, head of the Beryslav City Military Administration, confirmed the church's significance as an integral part of the city's history through a Facebook post. The church, historically under the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, was targeted amidst Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which saw significant territorial gains by the end of 2022.

The Kherson region, a strategic location on the route to Crimea, has faced continuous bombardment, putting its cultural and religious sites at great risk. Skeiron, a Lviv-based cultural heritage organization, urgently sought images of the church to digitally preserve what was once a monumental piece of Ukrainian history. This incident follows a series of Russian attacks on Ukraine's cultural heritage, including the destruction of the Dontsiv-Zakharzhevsky Manor in Kharkiv, the burial site of Prince Grigory Potemkin, and a monastery in Kyiv, highlighting the broader threat to Ukraine's identity and history amidst the conflict.
