Russian barrage on Kyiv kills 17 as Ukraine fails to down missiles

Early Wednesday, Russia launched a series of missile strikes on Kyiv and its surrounding regions, resulting in at least 17 deaths and 44 injuries, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attacks commenced just after midnight, with residents enduring air raid sirens for over an hour. Ukraine's air force had priorly warned of incoming ballistic missiles, but the country's air defenses were unable to intercept any of the incoming strikes, which comprised 115 drones and 28 high-speed missiles, including ballistic ones.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy expressed concern that ballistic missile interceptors could have prevented the loss of life. He emphasized that delays in supplying these crucial systems, or reluctance to provide them, directly contribute to the devastating casualties and destruction caused by Russian attacks. Zelenskyy further noted that the number of air defense missiles provided by allies has dropped threefold compared to the same period in 2025, a trend that extends to the first half of 2026 as well.

Kyiv's military administration reported that seven sites within the city were targeted, causing damage to residential buildings, warehouses, and logistics centers for major retailers. The enemy is once again deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, according to a statement from Kyiv's military administration on Telegram.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that one warehouse near the city center was destroyed, and rescue teams recovered two individuals from the rubble, though there were still potential survivors under the debris. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Klitschko clarified that initial reports of a burning 20-story apartment building were incorrect; however, a significant fire did break out on the outskirts of the city. Debris from a downed missile landed close to a residential building. The attack also caused an ammonia leak, which emergency crews worked diligently to contain. Additionally, warehouses in the surrounding districts of Brovary, Fastiv, and Bucha were struck by the missile strikes.
