Russian attacks kill 17, exploiting Ukraine’s lack of missile interceptors

On August 5, a devastating ballistic missile attack targeted Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, resulting in the tragic loss of 17 lives and 44 injuries, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Kremlin's primary targets were civilian warehouses, including a brewing company, building materials facilities, and logistics facilities, with no ties to the ongoing conflict.

Zelenskyy emphasized that ballistic missile interceptors could have prevented these needless casualties and destruction, urging partners to supply them urgently. He further suggested that non-immediate assistance could be countered with new sanctions, as numerous Russian missile production facilities remain untargeted by existing sanctions.

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to those ready to aid in protecting human life, particularly the G7 and EU nations. Russian forces launched four Zircon/Oniks anti-ship missiles and 24 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles during the overnight strike on August 5, which evaded air defenses. The explosion at a nonresidential site in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district led to an ammonia leak, causing fires in several districts, including Brovary, Bucha, and Fastiv.

These fires resulted in additional casualties and air quality deterioration. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian State Emergency Service reported 14 deaths and 22 injuries in Kyiv Oblast, while two people were killed on a railway platform in Brovary due to large fires at warehouses and logistics facilities.
