Rising power bills: BUK bans charging of electric vehicles on campus

Bayero University, Kano has prohibited residents from charging their personal electric motorcycles and vehicles on university premises, citing soaring electricity expenses. The university disclosed its decision in a statement released by its Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, on Tuesday. According to the statement, the administration noticed unauthorized charging of private electric motorcycles and other electric vehicles using the institution's electricity supply across its campuses.

The practice has significantly increased the university's electricity bills, placing a massive financial strain on the institution. "The Management of Bayero University, Kano has observed with concern the indiscriminate charging of privately owned electric motorcycles and other electric vehicles using the University’s electricity supply across its campuses," the statement reads.

"This practice has contributed significantly to the sharp increase in the University’s electricity bills, thereby placing an enormous financial burden on the institution. At a time when the University is committed to the prudent management of its resources, the continued use of University electricity for charging private electric motorcycles is no longer sustainable."

The university has now banned the charging of electric motorcycles and other privately owned electric vehicles on all campuses and premises, effective immediately. All staff, students, commercial motorcycle operators, and other users of electric motorcycles are instructed to cease charging their vehicles with the institution's electricity supply.

Violators will face disciplinary action in accordance with the university's rules and regulations. The management expects full compliance with this directive and will conduct regular patrols across all campuses to ensure adherence. The institution urges affected individuals to cooperate with the directive to reduce energy costs and ensure the responsible use of university resources.
