Progressive Will Lawrence wins key Michigan House primary in blow to Dem leaders

Will Lawrence, co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, has emerged victorious in a pivotal Democratic House primary in Michigan's 7th District, marking a significant setback for party leaders. The seat, considered a crucial target for Democrats in the upcoming November elections, has long been a point of contention. Several high-profile Democratic moderates had voiced skepticism about Lawrence's chances in the general election, citing his left-leaning policies.

However, progressives have contested these concerns, arguing that the traditional metric of electability is no longer applicable. Lawrence bested Bridget Brink, a former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, and Matt Maasdam, a Navy SEAL and former aide to President Obama, according to the Associated Press. The result underscores the fears of party leaders in both Michigan and Washington D.C., who had predicted that Maasdam and Brink's contesting could split the moderate vote, paving the way for Lawrence's win.

The race saw a split in support, with the Democratic Women's Caucus rallying behind Brink and former Senator Elissa Slotkin backing Maasdam. Lawrence's victory is part of a growing trend of progressive candidates defeating more establishment-aligned opponents in key swing districts this election season. Similar outcomes have been seen in races such as California's 21st District, where progressive activist Randy Villegas defeated moderate Jasmeet Bains, and Maine's 1st District, where progressive state Auditor Matt Dunlap triumphed over Joe Baldacci.

Despite backing candidates like Bains and Baldacci, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee refrained from endorsing Lawrence in Michigan's 7th District.
