Pirates to release Marcell Ozuna, promote Ronny Simon for roster spot, AP source says

The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to release veteran designated hitter Marcell Ozuna as they prepare for a playoff run, according to an Associated Press source. The 35-year-old has struggled mightily in recent weeks, failing to regain form despite being a three-time All-Star and hitting 296 homers in his career. The Pirates, who sit three and a half games behind Arizona in the National League's wild-card race, plan to promote outfielder Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis to fill Ozuna's roster spot.

Signed to a $12 million one-year deal in February, Ozuna's performance with Pittsburgh has been a disappointment, with a .203 average, eight home runs, and 29 RBIs in 70 games. Ozuna's playing time has been limited due to the emergence of rookie Esmerlyn Valdez. The decision to let Ozuna go comes after the Pirates fortified their bullpen by acquiring Luke Weaver from the New York Mets during the trade deadline.

Despite manager Don Kelly and general manager Ben Cherington's assurances, it was decided that Ozuna was no longer necessary for the team's postseason ambitions.
