Pakistan, US hold counterterrorism dialogue, reaffirm commitment to combating terrorist groups

The United States and Pakistan convened a fourth counterterrorism dialogue in Washington on Tuesday, reaffirming their commitment to combating terrorist organizations and enhancing security cooperation amid heightened regional tensions. Led by US Coordinator for Counterterrorism Ambassador Gregory LoGerfo and Pakistan's Special Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir, the joint statement highlighted shared interests in the partnership and determination to confront terrorism, specifically naming ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K), Al Qaeda, the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) among threats to regional security.

Both nations affirmed their joint resolve to combat these organizations and strengthen counterterrorism collaboration. This dialogue marks a shift from the challenging period following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, where both countries previously expressed concerns over terrorist sanctuaries and cross-border militancy.

Pakistan's strategic location and diplomatic relations with neighboring countries have increased its importance in regional diplomacy, particularly during the US-Iran conflict where Islamabad mediated between the two sides. In parallel, Pakistani Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb held a virtual meeting with US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer in Islamabad to discuss progress on ongoing negotiations aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

The meeting, held approximately three weeks after Aurangzeb's visit to Washington, reviewed the advancements in talks focusing on tariffs, market access, investment opportunities, and economic cooperation. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress and reaffirmed their commitment to finalizing the reciprocal trade framework at the earliest, recognizing its potential to support Pakistan's export-led growth strategy and economic resilience.
