O'Brien bullish for Newport after 'amazing' Roma game

Former Newport County captain Mark O'Brien expressed his optimism for the upcoming season following the club's pre-season defeat to Roma. Despite the 4-1 loss to the Serie A champions, O'Brien praised the atmosphere at Rodney Parade, describing it as "amazing" and a testament to the support of the fans. He stated, "It was amazing and great to have a massive encounter with such a big team."

O'Brien, who has made over 100 appearances for Newport and now serves as a club ambassador, believes this occasion further boosts fan morale, especially with the appointment of new manager Hayden Mullins. He noted, "To be able to enjoy the occasion with the family-feel like it was, and no pressure on the result, I think the city and everyone involved with the club can hold their heads very high. They did themselves proud."

O'Brien also highlighted the experience gained by the players against Roma, including six summer signings, as a valuable learning opportunity. He said, "The bigger picture was the occasion, to be able to give something back to the fans and the city." He added that despite the loss, the players have done themselves proud and should be prepared for the League Two campaign.

"Some players have just come out of Welsh League and all of a sudden were against the likes of (Paulo) Dybala who is a World Cup winner - all experiences that will go down in the history books of Newport," O'Brien said. With Newport's next fixture being a League Two opener against Rochdale on August 15, O'Brien remains hopeful for the club's future.
