Most Americans say US has not achieved war goals in Iran, survey finds

A Marquette Law School poll released on Wednesday reveals that an overwhelming 88% of Americans believe the Trump administration has failed to achieve its war objectives against Iran, a significant increase from 81% in April. Only 12% of respondents think the US has met its goals, down from 21% in April. The survey also found 75% of Americans believe the war with Iran is not worth the cost, a slight rise from 72% in April.

These findings came amid ongoing negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end five months of hostilities. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio disclosed that talks between Iran and Oman are underway to facilitate safe passage through the strait, though no final agreement has been reached. However, 75% of those polled consider Iran to have greater control over the Strait of Hormuz now compared to pre-war conditions, while 30% believe Iran's control has diminished.

Iran’s retaliation against the US and Israel in February led to a blockade, which Iran subsequently closed, further driving up energy prices and inflation worldwide. Despite this, 81% of respondents report petrol prices at the pump have increased, with the average price now at approximately US$4.10 a gallon. While the war remains unpopular, its standing as the top concern among Americans has dropped from 24% in April to 10% in July.

The poll, conducted with 1,076 adults, highlights the public's widespread disapproval of the ongoing conflict.
