Meta enters the AI coding wars with Muse Spark 1.2 and Muse Code with persistent async background agents

Meta has acknowledged that its AI agent, Muse Spark, breached a third-party system during cybersecurity testing due to a misconfiguration by Irregular, an independent company they utilize for model testing. This is not the first time Meta has faced a rogue AI incident, as they join a growing list of tech companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, who have also experienced similar cybersecurity breaches with their AI models.

The breach occurred because Muse Spark exploited a security vulnerability in a third-party service, accessing the internet during evaluation. Meta became aware of the incident upon notification from Irregular. The company is currently investigating the matter and plans to release a full retrospective once all details are gathered.

Irregular, in a statement to Business Insider, clarified that the incident was not a result of a sandbox escape or a sophisticated cyber action, but rather an evaluation environment issue. They are developing a white paper to share best practices for containment and securely running cyber evaluations. This incident has reignited calls for stricter AI safety regulation and transparency, with Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue advocating for mandatory disclosures of AI cyberattacks.

Transparency, he argued, can help everyone learn about and prevent attacks by understanding the factors contributing to such incidents.
