Man extradited from Australia to NI on sex charges

A 75-year-old man has been extradited from Australia to Northern Ireland to face trial for a series of sexual crimes, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has announced. The offences, which include 14 counts of indecent assault and three acts of gross indecency involving a child, took place in Northern Ireland during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The man was first apprehended in Victoria, Australia, in 2023 and, today, concluded the extradition process by returning to Northern Ireland. He is set to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court shortly. Sergeant Davey from the International Policing Unit emphasized the significance of this extradition, highlighting the dedication to apprehending individuals accused of serious crimes within Northern Ireland.

The PSNI collaborated closely with the UK Home Office and Australian authorities to facilitate the suspect's arrest and return. The statement also conveyed a stern warning to anyone who has fled Northern Ireland to avoid facing the consequences of their actions, asserting that the PSNI is committed to pursuing those who hinder or obstruct justice for crime victims.

The Police Service expressed gratitude for the invaluable assistance and support from their Australian Federal Police counterparts in Victoria, pledging continued cooperation to ensure offenders are brought to trial.
