Lionel Messi donates to Spanish region after devastating wildfires

Lionel Messi has demonstrated his philanthropic spirit by donating €80,000 to aid the recovery efforts of the Spanish region of Sierra Oeste, which suffered devastating wildfires. The Inter Miami star's contribution was confirmed by the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, who expressed gratitude for Messi's generosity and hinted at the possibility of the football icon visiting Madrid in the future to personally thank the locals for their support.

The wildfires, fueled by an intense summer heatwave affecting both Spain and France, have left a trail of destruction across the region. Over 22,000 hectares of land were burned, resulting in the destruction of at least 43 homes and severe damage to more than 300 others. Emergency services have been working tirelessly to battle the flames, but the full extent of the devastation is yet to be fully assessed. Recovery efforts are expected to be a lengthy process.

Although Messi was born in Argentina, he holds a significant connection to Spain, having spent over two decades living and playing in the country before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2010, Messi has been actively involved in charitable work, supporting various causes focused on children's healthcare, education, and wellbeing around the globe.

Through his own foundation, he has also contributed to several humanitarian initiatives, such as the construction of a paediatric cancer centre in Barcelona.

In 2025, Messi was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the United States for his humanitarian efforts and lasting impact beyond football.
