Kids' outdoor program halted as council raises safety concerns

Mount Barker District Council has halted the popular Forest School SA outdoor program at Anembo Park after identifying safety concerns. Program founder Bell Gower received an email from the council ordering immediate cessation of activities while the matter is being reviewed. The council expressed significant concerns over the safety risks associated with the current activities, citing evidence of damage to trees, fire pits, and activities encroaching on land under the Department for Infrastructure and Transport's care.

During the site inspection, council officers noted swings installed within the reserve, which was situated adjacent to the South Eastern Freeway with no physical barrier separating participants from the roadway. Council has directed that the current operation cease until it can be lawfully and safely assessed, but has committed to working with Forest School SA to determine a compliant pathway forward.

Program founder Gower expressed doubt about the program's resumption at the site, stating that the closure has come as a huge shock to employees and families. About 40 families are enrolled in the program, which has attracted hundreds of participants during school holidays.
