KHNP Strengthens Philippines Nuclear Push with New Partnership

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) is bolstering its push into the Philippine nuclear energy sector through a new partnership with Aboitiz Power Corporation. The agreement, signed on July 31, aims to collaborate on future nuclear power projects in the Philippines. Under the memorandum of understanding, the two companies will exchange nuclear technology and policy information, conduct feasibility studies for new plants, offer training programs, and establish joint working groups.

This move comes as the Philippine government accelerates plans to introduce nuclear energy to meet increasing electricity demand and ensure long-term energy security. AboitizPower, one of the Philippines' largest integrated energy companies, will play a pivotal role in the partnership, given its diverse portfolio of generation facilities and distribution activities.

The agreement follows a previous tripartite MOU between KHNP, the Export-Import Bank of Korea, and Manila Electric Company. The Philippine government has been exploring nuclear power as a potential solution to its reliance on imported fossil fuels and rising carbon emissions. The country aims to commission its first nuclear power plant by 2032, supported by legal reforms, site evaluations, and international cooperation.

South Korea is seen as a strong competitor in the Philippine market due to its successful experience with nuclear power plants, including the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates. KHNP's comprehensive capabilities in nuclear development, from design to operation, give it an edge in the growing global demand for nuclear expertise.
