‘Just an easy cash grab’: why Jetstar is charging customers for carry-on luggage

From February 2027, Jetstar will begin charging passengers for carry-on baggage in overhead lockers, limiting free storage to small under-seat bags. The budget airline will discontinue its current 7-kilogram allowance, moving to a model where only a limited-sized backpack, handbag or laptop bag can be stored under the seat at no extra cost.

Extra carry-on bags will incur a minimum fee of $25 per flight, potentially rising to $52 on international routes. Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully explained that the changes aim to alleviate customer frustration caused by weighing carry-on bags at the gate and the scarcity of overhead locker space. The airline claims the new policy will optimize overhead locker usage, streamline boarding, and maintain affordable fares.

Passengers will still receive a complimentary under-seat bag allowance of 40x30x20cm, with infants entitled to an additional bag at no cost. Existing bookings for flights after the implementation date will be upgraded to include priority carry-on boarding without charge. While some travelers welcomed the potential for lower fares and reduced stress, others viewed the move as a money-making scheme, questioning whether it would genuinely enhance the boarding process.
