Jeff Dean and three distinguished Google executives are departing the tech giant to establish Discovery Loop, a venture dedicated to pioneering AI-driven breakthroughs in drug discovery, chip design, and beyond. Dean emphasized that the startup would focus on an automated version of the scientific method, wherein thousands of automated loops could yield groundbreaking advancements across science, biology, chip design, and AI model improvement.

Dean, along with fellow Google veterans Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le, announced the company's formation, signaling a significant setback for Google as it strives to maintain competitiveness in the rapidly evolving AI model landscape. Vinyals and Le, renowned figures in the AI sphere, are set to join forces with Dean and Ghemawat in launching Discovery Loop.

The quartet expressed their enthusiasm for automating machine learning and the potential to innovate in various domains, including chip design and drug discovery. The startup plans to initially target its advanced machine learning algorithms before expanding to other fields. The founders seek to develop a superhuman AI system capable of generating novel ideas, although humans will initially collaborate with the AI.

Notable backers include Khosla Ventures and Radical Ventures, alongside other firms. Khosla praised the team's exceptional talent, emphasizing the unique advantage of leveraging AI as a researcher.
