Is 20 megapixels still enough today – 20MP vs 45MP can you really tell the difference?

In the autumn of 2024, Nikon introduced the 20MP Nikon Z50 II (Z50 Mark II, Z50II), an entry-level mirrorless camera. To address the question of whether 20MP is still sufficient, photographer Nigel Danson conducted a video comparison between the Z50II and a 45MP full-frame camera, Nikon Z8, during a photo shoot in the Peak District.

Danson printed prints of the resulting landscape photos at various sizes, including A2 and A3. He noted that the majority of people share images on social media and print them at A2 or A3 sizes. In response, Danson compared the outcomes from the 20MP Z50II with the 45MP Z8. He emphasized that focusing on capturing photos is more crucial than fixating on megapixel counts.

Danson agreed that 20MP is sufficient for sharing images on social media or printing up to A3 in size (at a distance). The question often arises in discussions about Micro Four Thirds cameras, as most offer 20MP sensors (with up to 25MP in some Panasonic models). However, these cameras also provide a high-resolution multi-shot mode, enabling resolutions up to 100MP, unlike the Nikon Z50II, which does not offer this feature.

Megapixels are just one aspect of image quality, alongside color reproduction, ISO performance, dynamic range, autofocus, and continuous shooting. Additionally, the variety of available lenses play a vital role; for instance, macro photography requires compatible macro lenses. Fortunately, Nikon provides an extensive array of Z-mount lenses, although the selection of affordable DX (APS-C) lenses remains limited.
