Hyderabad SHE Teams nabs 678 for harassing women during Bonalu festivities

In the city of Hyderabad, special teams focused on women's safety (SHE Teams) apprehended 678 individuals accused of harassing women or engaging in misconduct during the annual Bonalu festivities. These teams were strategically placed at temples, procession routes, bus stops, Metro stations, marketplaces, and other crowded areas to monitor the festivities closely.

The SHE Teams conducted surveillance under the guise of normal citizens, keeping a watchful eye on vulnerable locations to swiftly intervene when incidents of harassment were detected. Throughout the Bonalu bandobast, the teams received 122 complaints across various categories related to harassment.

Of the 678 people caught, 25 were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment, accompanied by fines by the courts. Another 13 cases led to convictions after thorough investigation and legal proceedings. These accused were apprehended and charged under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Hyderabad City Police Act.

Those brought before the courts faced sentences ranging from up to three days of simple imprisonment to fines of ₹1,050 for each offense. Additionally, 26 individuals involved in petty cases received the same fine and were ordered to perform community service.
