Huawei made an utterly sleek laptop that’s 35% lighter than MacBook Air. Too bad you don’t need it.

Huawei has introduced an incredibly slim laptop, the MateBook Pro S, which is approximately 35% lighter than the MacBook Air. Weighing a mere 798 grams, it is thinner at 11.9mm, yet still manages to house a larger display and a 54Wh battery within its magnesium-alloy body. The laptop boasts striking pastel color options that set it apart from the typical silver, gray, and black color schemes of other ultrabooks.

Its 14.2-inch OLED touchscreen comes with a 3:2 aspect ratio, providing more vertical space for documents and websites. The panel features a resolution of 3120 x 2080 pixels, runs at 120Hz, and offers HDR playback with a brightness of up to 1,600 nits, covering the P3 color gamut. Huawei also offers a Privacy Screen Edition, which utilizes technology similar to Samsung's display on the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

By pressing a dedicated button, users can activate the privacy mode, which narrows the viewing angle to protect the screen from the sides while allowing clear visibility for the person sitting directly in front. An onboard AI feature can detect when someone is peering at the screen and alert the user.

Despite its sleek design, the laptop's performance is powered by Huawei's own Kirin XE90 processor, with a maximum of 32GB of memory and 1TB of storage. The cooling system supports up to 20 watts, and the device offers up to 18 hours of 1080p video playback, with support for 66W USB-C charging. Connectivity options are limited to only two 5Gbps USB-C ports, with one capable of driving a 4K display at 60Hz. The laptop also includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, four speakers, six microphones, and front and rear 1080p cameras.

Running HarmonyOS 6.1, the MateBook Pro S comes with Huawei's own AI assistant, meeting transcription, cross-device control, and a software ecosystem. However, users reliant on Windows applications would need to adapt their workflow. Currently, the laptop is only available in China, and there is no confirmation regarding its export to other regions. Prices start at 7,999 yuan, or approximately $1,185, with higher-end configurations reaching 14,999 yuan, or around $2,220.

While the laptop's design is undeniably appealing, its use of HarmonyOS makes it impractical for most buyers outside China for now. Meanwhile, Google is making strides in the AI frontier, with its Gemini AI models surpassing competitors like Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol. Google is actively promoting Gemini to students in the U.S. by offering free access to Google AI Pro for a year, along with a dedicated Student Hub.

Additionally, Meta has introduced its Meta AI assistant to the Mac, enabling users to analyze shared windows, generate content, and accept voice dictation.
