Greg Olsen Being Considered to Replace Tony Romo at CBS: Report

Following Tony Romo's recent arrest for suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence (OWI), CBS may be contemplating a permanent departure for the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback. Initially, Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt was named as Romo's interim replacement on CBS' top broadcast team. However, the network may now be considering a bigger name for the long-term replacement.

According to Puck's John Ourand, former Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen is also being contemplated to replace Romo. Olsen, who currently works as a color commentator on Fox's No. 2 broadcast crew alongside Joe Davis, has gained a large following due to his broadcasting skills. It is noteworthy that Olsen was previously the top analyst for Fox, partnering with Kevin Burkhardt before Fox signed Tom Brady to a lucrative 10-year, $375 million contract, which led to Olsen's demotion to a lower salary.

Reports suggest that Olsen was earning around $10 million annually in his previous role, but after Brady's arrival, his salary was reduced to $3 million per year. If CBS aims to recruit Olsen away from Fox, they may have to offer a salary closer to what he was earning four years ago, which was approximately $10 million per year.

CBS reportedly harbored some animosity towards Romo from their previous contract negotiation, resulting in his $18 million-per-year salary, making him one of the highest-paid broadcasters in the industry. CBS owes a total of $72 million over the next four years, which could be mitigated if they were to let Romo go with cause.
