Ghana Chamber of Mines donates GH¢2m relief items to NADMO to support flood victims

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has contributed relief items, amounting to GH¢2 million, to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in aid of flood victims. The donation comprised items such as mattresses, bed sheets, rice, waterproof boots, gloves, and beverages. This gesture came amid renewed government calls for a unified approach towards disaster management.

Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Terlabi, on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior, acknowledged the Chamber's and its member companies' support for affected families. He underscored the devastating impact of floods on homes, livelihoods, and communities, including the loss of lives and the disruption of education and livelihoods.

Terlabi lauded the Chamber for its continuous contribution to national development and humanitarian efforts, reminding of its prior aid to communities affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage. He assured that NADMO would distribute the relief items fairly, transparently, and to those in dire need. The Deputy Minister also appealed to corporate entities, faith-based organizations, and philanthropists to join government in supporting disaster victims, stressing the necessity of stronger partnerships for disaster preparedness and response.

He further advocated for long-term measures to mitigate the effects of flooding, including improved urban planning, efficient drainage systems, waterway protection, waste management, and enhanced early warning systems. Ing. Ken Ashigbey, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, expressed sympathy for those impacted by the floods and called for increased investment in NADMO to bolster its capacity for preventive interventions and disaster reduction.
