Former Cub Catches Ball to the Head at Wrigley Field

Kyle Tucker, a former Chicago Cub, experienced a mixed return to Wrigley Field this week. On Tuesday, he achieved a home run, but his overall performance has drawn criticism from Cubs fans since his departure to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Outside of the two instances mentioned, Tucker's presence at the Cubs has been marked by discontent.

During the game, Tucker was involved in two plays that posed a near concussion risk. Firstly, he pursued a powerful hit ball towards the right field, narrowly avoiding a collision with the wall. However, his subsequent collision with the wall was quite forceful. Later, as he prepared to take his position in the batter's box, Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya attempted to throw the ball back to the pitcher; yet, his throw struck Tucker directly in his helmet.

Although Tucker seemed fine, hanging his head momentarily before securing his helmet and informing the umpire of his readiness to continue playing, Amaya expressed remorse and checked on Tucker afterwards.

Remarkably, Tucker maintained his composure and stayed in the game, contributing to a multi-hit performance, including that second-inning solo home run. This suggests a positive turn in his season with the Dodgers, where he has a .240 batting average, nine home runs, and 51 RBIs overall. The figures represent a significant drop from his previous performance, having been an All-Star for four consecutive seasons prior to 2026, earning both a Golden Glove and two Silver Slugger awards.
