Factories shed workers in Bangladesh garment sector

Factories in Bangladesh's garment sector are shedding workers due to slowing exports, weak customer demand and intense competition from rivals like India and Vietnam. Mosammat Aklima, a garment worker, was among 3,000 people laid off in a single go, becoming one of thousands of layoffs in the latest industry downturn. Aklima, who was expecting her third child, expressed her concerns about finding a new job and providing for her family, as she and her husband now rely on a single income.

The industry accounts for around 80% of Bangladesh's export earnings, employing over 4.5 million people, mostly women. European Union apparel imports from Bangladesh, including Aklima's factory, have seen the sharpest decline among major suppliers, indicating the sector's vulnerability in Europe's largest market. Experts warn that Bangladesh may lose its duty-free preferential market access in Europe in 2029, which could further threaten the industry's competitiveness.

Labour advocates urge for integrated government policies to help workers adapt to changing industrial needs during this transition.
