Donavan McKinney overtakes incumbent Thanedar

Donavan McKinney emerged victorious in Michigan's 13th Congressional District primary, defeating incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar. This win is significant as it would restore Detroit's Black representation in Congress, which had ended with Thanedar's 2022 win. McKinney secured the race with 51.9% of the vote compared to Thanedar's 48.1%, according to the Associated Press.

The incumbent had funding and name recognition advantages but struggled to secure support from progressive-backed candidates, as noted by Axios' Andrew Solender. Although McKinney must secure a November win to officially take his seat, it's unlikely given the district's heavy blue lean, which spans most of Detroit and westward to Taylor.

Both candidates emphasized opposition to Trump, criticism of ICE, and the expansion of healthcare access in their campaigns. While Thanedar, a self-funded wealthy businessman, received endorsements from AIPAC, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and progressive groups like the Congressional Progressive Caucus and New Democrat Coalition, McKinney earned backing from local institutions such as the Michigan Chronicle and labor groups, as well as national progressive figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and former Rep. Brenda Lawrence.

The race was more complex than a simple ideological battle, involving McKinney's ties to Detroit, Thanedar's legislative record, doubts about his effectiveness, and the potential return of Detroit's Black representation in Congress.
