Demis Hassabis steps down from Google DeepMind CEO role amid a major AI leadership shake-up

Alphabet's Google is experiencing a significant leadership shift in its artificial intelligence division as several prominent AI veterans depart the company. Jeff Dean, a key figure in Google's AI strategy development, is leaving to launch a new start-up called Discovery Loop, which aims to automate machine learning research. Along with Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals, prominent DeepMind employees, are also joining Discovery Loop.

Demis Hassabis, the head of Google DeepMind, is stepping down from his operational role to become the chairman of the lab, taking on the additional title of chief scientist for Alphabet. Hassabis is being promoted to senior vice-president of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Alphabet's CEO, Sundar Pichai. The restructuring of Google's AI efforts follows a recent delay in the launch of the Gemini model, despite Google's substantial investment in AI infrastructure and talent.

The move is seen as a potential threat to Google's competitive edge in the rapidly advancing field of generative AI, which could impact its search and advertising businesses.
