Confusion as traders re-erect containers at Baba Yara Stadium after KMA demolition

Security forces led by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) cleared unauthorized structures near Baba Yara Sports Stadium to restore order and sanitation. However, four days later, fresh container structures have appeared as construction workers laid foundations for new stalls in cleared areas. Some affected traders, who have rebuilt their containers, claim the move aligns with directives from the KMA and Mayor following the recent demolition.

They praised the Mayor for authorizing them to redesign their structures to comply with the urban beautification drive. Osei Lucy and Afia Frimponmaa, two traders, explained that they engaged a contractor to construct new containers adhering to the Mayor's standards, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to remain in business.

Since the redesign, 14 traders have erected their containers, reporting positive public feedback. However, some food vendors, affected by the demolition, have raised security and safety concerns regarding the new container design. They argue that the containers use highly flammable materials, which could trigger fire outbreaks due to their cooking activities.

Additionally, they expressed worry about the weak locks on the containers, fearing theft of their goods. Engineer Obeng Asamoah Dubofo, the contractor for the project, dismissed these claims, stating that the containers use non-flammable materials and meet the required safety and building standards approved by the KMA. The KMA confirmed it authorized traders to rebuild their containers to match the new uniform design, with the Public Relations Officer for the KMA, Henrietta Afia Aboagye, stating that the re-emergence of the structures is part of a planned redevelopment initiative to create a more organized and orderly trading environment.
