Canada PM Carney says has no confidence in Fifa’s Infantino

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada, who co-hosted the 2026 World Cup, has expressed his lack of confidence in Fifa President Gianni Infantino. Speaking to reporters in Toronto, Carney stated that he no longer has faith in Infantino's capacity to lead world football's governing body, following the controversial plan to open the World Cup to private investment.

This plan, now shelved, called for the creation of a new commercial subsidiary, the Fifa Forward Enterprise, to handle events such as the World Cup. Infantino has faced mounting pressure, even from within his organization, regarding his handling of the proposal, and calls for his resignation have intensified since its abandonment last Saturday.

Carney emphasized that Infantino's failure to consult with Fifa's senior management team about the plan "should be fatal" to his tenure. In an attempt to mitigate the crisis, Infantino had convened emergency talks with Fifa directors in Morocco, the host of the 2030 World Cup. Despite the success of the recent World Cup, which was the largest ever with 48 teams and co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the US, Infantino's tenure is now under unprecedented threat due to global outrage over the scrapped plan.
