Billionaires have been flooding the midterms with cash, but one of the GOP’s most reliable megadonors just went silent

In recent times, billionaires have been pouring large sums of money into Republican midterm campaigns, with one of the most reliable GOP donors, Ronald Lauder, unexpectedly ceasing his political donations, according to a New York Times report. Lauder, a billionaire heir to the cosmetics conglomerate Estée Lauder and a longtime supporter of President Donald Trump, had contributed tens of millions of dollars to Republican campaigns over the past few decades, earning him the title of a "one-man bank for Republicans in New York."

However, his last political donation was in January 2026, a mere $5,000 to Security is Strength PAC, a stark contrast to his previous donations, which ranged from $250,000 to the Truth & Courage PAC in 2021 to over $13 million between 2020 and 2022 to Safe Together New York Inc., supporting Lee Zeldin's gubernatorial campaign in New York.

This sudden halt in donations, compared to other billionaires like Elon Musk, who also donated $5 million to MAGA Inc. in 2025, highlights the shift in political funding dynamics. Billionaires have contributed over $433 million to the 2026 midterms, with nearly 80% of donations backing Republicans, as reported by Americans for Tax Fairness.

While Lauder's withdrawal from political donations may not drastically change the overall funding landscape, losing a major donor in New York could impact Republican candidates, particularly as Governor Kathy Hochul defends her seat in the November election. Experts suggest that while money is crucial in politics, it cannot guarantee victory, as successful campaigns also require effective messaging and ground operations.

The reasons behind Lauder's decision to stop donating are unclear, with possibilities including a shrinking family fortune and a focus on his legacy. Lauder's wealth has dwindled due to Estée Lauder's stock decline and his own real estate and asset sales. He has also reportedly dismissed his political advisors, signaling a potential shift in his involvement in political affairs.
