Waymo opens up robotaxi service in Dallas to everyone

Autonomous vehicle company Waymo has ended its waitlist for robotaxi service in Dallas, now allowing all residents and visitors to access the technology. This move is part of Waymo's plan to expand its self-driving technology in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States. On Tuesday, the company announced that anyone can now download the Waymo app and instantly request a ride from one of its robotaxis in Dallas.

Currently, riders cannot request a ride to Dallas Love Field Airport, as the company continues to test its self-driving vehicles at the airport and aims to serve passengers there "soon."

Waymo has been active in Dallas since last year, beginning its self-driving vehicle tests on public streets and announcing a planned launch of the service in 2026. Partnering with Avis Budget Group, Waymo manages its fleet of all-electric autonomous Jaguar I-Pace vehicles for maintenance and charging. Initially, the service was limited through a waitlist in February, but about 150,000 riders utilized the Waymo app during this period.

Waymo no longer has the waitlist, adhering to its established approach in other markets like Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Early challenges were faced when Waymo halted its robotaxi service in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Atlanta in May due to issues handling heavy rain and flooded roads. However, the robotaxi services have since resumed in these cities, with Waymo reserving the right to adjust or temporarily pause operations during severe weather, flood warnings, and other real-time conditions. If riders want to know the status of Waymo's service, they can check it via the Waymo app.
