Water dispenser linked to legionnaires’ disease case in private Hong Kong hospital

Hong Kong recorded its first fatal case of child influenza for the year 2026 on Tuesday, as a seven-year-old boy passed away nine days after displaying symptoms. Prior to his demise, the boy exhibited symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, and fever. Health authorities reported that the previously healthy child's condition rapidly deteriorated on Monday, leading to his admission to the paediatric intensive care unit at Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung.

A respiratory sample from the boy tested positive for the influenza A (H3) virus, resulting in a diagnosis of influenza A infection compounded by shock and encephalopathy, brain dysfunction conditions. Despite receiving the seasonal influenza vaccine in the 2025-26 scheme, the child succumbed to the illness on Tuesday. The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) emphasized the need for heightened vigilance during the flu season, urging the public to maintain stringent personal and environmental hygiene.

The CHP warned that the influenza situation in Hong Kong is likely to persist as the season progresses, urging high-risk groups, including children, the elderly, those with pre-existing health issues, and immunocompromised individuals, to wear surgical masks when in crowded or public transport settings. The center cautioned that the health of flu-infected children could deteriorate swiftly, and parents should closely monitor their child's condition.

Immediate medical attention is advised if signs of worsening health appear, such as rapid breathing, bluish lips, chest pain, and persistent fever.
