Universal Below-The-Line Traineeship: On Set. On The Job. Building the Future of Filmmaking

Since launching in 2021, the Universal Below-the-Line Traineeship program has been dedicated to expanding opportunities in production roles across Universal Pictures and Focus Features films. A key goal is supporting crews in their home communities by connecting aspiring talent with hands-on experience on set. Brandon Williams, Senior Vice President of Universal Talent Development, emphasized the importance of skilled crews in every region where stories are told.

Over five years, the Traineeship has seen productions, department heads, and crew members collaborate to develop talent and share knowledge. The initiative partners with local colleges, workforce development organizations, unions, and industry allies to identify potential trainees and place them in various departments like Set Decoration, Props, and Visual Effects.

Veteran filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas have witnessed firsthand how the program integrates seamlessly into filmmaking. Trainees gain practical experience while contributing to the actual production, which is invaluable for both newcomers and established professionals. Now in its fifth year, the Traineeship is expanding with more cohorts and departments, reflecting a long-term commitment to filmmaking's future.
