Tread carefully: UAE drivers warned over tyre blowout risk as summer temperatures soar

UAE motorists are being cautioned about the heightened risk of tyre blowouts during the intense summer heat. Safety experts warn that poorly maintained tyres, exposed to high temperatures, can expand and crack, increasing the risk of a blowout. Between 2023 and 2025, 65 accidents were caused by tyre blowouts on UAE roads. Abu Dhabi Police has shared footage of accidents involving burst tyres on the roads.

The Abu Dhabi Police’s "Summer Safe" campaign urges drivers to conduct regular tyre checks to ensure safety. Neglecting maintenance or using poor-quality tyres may lead to severe accidents with fatalities. Over 37,900 motorists were fined in 2024 for driving vehicles with unsafe or worn-out tyres. A penalty includes a Dh500 fine, four black points on the licence, and a week-long vehicle impoundment.

A local garage in Abu Dhabi reported a significant increase in customers with damaged or underinflated tyres during summer. The hot weather leads to fluctuations in tyre pressure, often causing underinflation if not monitored regularly. Underinflation results in excessive heat buildup and stress on tyre walls. Overloading and damage from sharp objects further weaken tyres, while worn tread reduces grip and increases the risk of blowouts.

Thomas Edelmann, founder and managing director of Road Safety UAE, stated that tyre-related accidents accounted for 2% of road deaths in 2024. He emphasized the importance of warning signs not being ignored, even on short trips. Edelmann advised motorists to inspect tyres for defects, cuts, cracks, bulges, or uneven wear, and to check the spare tyre and wheel alignment before long trips. He also mentioned exploring a solution involving a liquid that can seal holes in tyres, keeping them in better condition for longer.
