Today’s Codex will feel “primitive” by fall — and its own team’s roadmap backs it up

Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's lead for core products, predicts today's Codex will seem outdated within two to three months. Speaking on X, Sottiaux noted that while Codex remains a capable tool, "the next generation of models need more than your laptop." This statement aligns with OpenAI's recent efforts to expand Codex beyond developer laptops.

Earlier this year, OpenAI acquired Ona, a company specializing in secure cloud development environments. This acquisition signals OpenAI's commitment to developing agents capable of working in customer cloud environments, even after the laptop initiating a task is offline. Ona's technology would provide Codex with persistent workspaces, allowing it to access necessary tools and dependencies without relying on local machines.

However, expanding Codex to the cloud introduces new security challenges. OpenAI's solution involves Ona's customer-controlled model, which allows agents to operate within an organization's cloud while ensuring the model and orchestration remain under OpenAI's control. While the acquisition may not directly cause Codex to become "primitive" in the short term, it reflects OpenAI's ongoing effort to advance the capabilities and practical applications of Codex.
