Tata Trusts, the philanthropic arm of the Tata Group, is shifting its focus from funding projects to building institutions, says its Chairman, Noel Tata. Speaking at IIM Bangalore's annual conclave on August 2, 2026, Tata emphasized the importance of creating lasting institutions in healthcare and education, drawing inspiration from the Tata Group's legacy of establishing public institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, and Tata Memorial Hospital.

The new roadmap unveiled by Tata Trusts aims to establish 40 to 50 not-for-profit general hospitals across the country, using a cross-subsidy model to ensure quality healthcare for economically weaker sections. Education will also be a major area of investment, with a new undergraduate institution being developed in partnership with IIM Bangalore.

Tata stressed the need for greater accountability in philanthropy, urging charitable organizations to demonstrate measurable outcomes rather than making broad claims of impact. He highlighted India's need for more world-class higher education institutions, as thousands of talented students continue to leave the country due to limited availability of quality institutions.

Tata also advocated reforms to encourage private investment in higher education. Beyond healthcare and education, he stressed the importance of measurable outcomes in philanthropy, noting that India's philanthropic landscape is transforming with more entrepreneurs committing personal wealth to social causes. Drawing lessons from the Tata Group's own history, Tata emphasized that many of its iconic businesses were created to address national developmental priorities, following the philosophy of "Do what India needs."
