Tamil-Muslim parties push for PC polls at meeting with AKD

A coalition of Tamil and Muslim political parties convened with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to discuss reforms and issues relevant to the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The alliance, comprising six parties, urged the President to introduce a new Constitution and hold Provincial Council elections, which have been postponed for an extended period.

During the meeting at the Presidential Secretariat, the President affirmed the Government's stance on reforming the Constitution and abolishing the Executive Presidency. However, he prioritized building a unified national consensus over hastily drafted amendments. The President emphasized the importance of inclusive and broad national dialogue to address the concerns of diverse communities.

Representatives from various parties raised concerns over the Provincial Council electoral system, the Delimitation Commission's work, and the challenges faced by communities in the Northern and Eastern Provinces due to outdated policies from institutions like the Department of Archaeology, Department of Forest Conservation, and Mahaweli Authority.

President Dissanayake reiterated the Government's commitment to a governance system accountable to Parliament and the country's unity. The meeting also addressed proposals to grant estate workers and staff legal ownership of 10-perch plots, as well as the effects of landslides in the Central Highlands. President Dissanayake stressed the need for sustainable environmental solutions and the Government's intention to include provisions in future lease agreements for the Malayagam community.

Additionally, discussions included a joint economic assistance program for the community and increased funding for the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure in the 2027 Budget.
